Frequently asked questions:

1. How long do crowns & bridges last?

Dental crowns & bridges can last five to 15 years and even longer with good oral hygiene and regular checkups.

2. How many visits do I need?

Usually, you need two visits, the first visit for examination, dental preparation, and taking measurements, and the second visit involves placement of the permanent crown or bridge.

3. Is there any procedure prior to making a crown or a bridge?

A few X-rays may be taken by the dentist to examine the surrounding bone and the roots of the tooth receiving the crown. A root canal procedure may be carried out initially if the tooth has severe decay or if there is a threat of infection or harm to the pulp.

4. What are the steps to prepare the tooth or teeth to receive the crown or bridge?

The tooth and the gum tissue surrounding it will be anesthetized (numb) by the dentist. After that, the tooth's chewing surface and sides are modified to make way for the crown. Depending on the sort of crown utilized, a certain amount is eliminated. On the other hand, your dentist will use filler material to "build up" the tooth to support the crown if a sizable portion of the tooth is missing (from decay or damage).  Your dentist will normally produce an impression of the tooth for the crown using paste or putty after reshaping the teeth. But occasionally, impressions are created using a digital scanner.

Additionally, your dentist will decide on the color that most nearly resembles the color of the adjacent teeth. Your dentist will create a temporary crown during this initial appointment to cover and safeguard the prepped tooth while the permanent one is being created.

Your dentist will take off the temporary crown and examine the permanent crown's fit and color during the second appointment. If everything is okay, a local anesthetic will be applied to numb the tooth before the new crown is firmly affixed.

5. Why do I have a dark line next to the gum line on the crowned tooth?

This issue occurred more frequently if your crown is made of porcelain bonded to metal. Simply said, the metal of the crown is visible through this black line. The problem with the black line is that it is not acceptable for the front teeth, and it is recommended to change the crown to another type such as zircon or ceramic.

6. How should I take care of my crown?

The fact that a tooth has a crown does not guarantee that it is immune to decay or gum disease. Continue to exercise good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing every day, especially in the region of the crown where the gum meets the tooth, and gargling with an antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day.
